East Belgium 8K

A Timelapse  movie

Time lapse 8K East Belgium – With more than 15,000 individual photos taken along the way, EAST BELGIUM 8K was created, a time-lapse film that invites you on a vivid journey of discovery through the nature of East Belgium, along the shores of our lakes and the panoramic landscapes of many villages.

FILM SYNOPSIS

The short film “East Belgium 8K” aims to raise awareness of the beauty and treasures of our wonderful home of East Belgium. We are lucky to be part of it. An awake view of the beauty of our surroundings gives us strength, energy and relaxation for everyday life.

Impressions of East Belgium:

(All Timelapse footage are shoot with Sony A7RIV and Sony A7RIII.)

During the last eight months, I travelled across East Belgium to create a special video about East Belgium. My aim was to explore our region, always keeping in mind to focus on the natural environment, the villages with their local attractions and the diversity of the geographical features in East Belgium. In the course of the project, I grew to want to highlight the positive characteristics of our home in East Belgium, especially in these difficult times caused by COVID19. We live in a wonderful region with countless beautiful villages that stretch from the north to the south of East Belgium.

With the help of this project, I would like to make the public aware of the beauty and treasures of this wonderful region that is East Belgium. We are lucky to live there and to be part of it. An attentive view of the beauty of our environment gives us strength, energy and relaxation for our daily life.

This video project was created within the framework of the Art Scholarship of the Deutschsprachigen Gemeinschaft, without whose support the project “East Belgium 8K” could not have been realised. (Time lapse 8K East Belgium)

"Moving" is short dance film which took place in Hong Kong: A very busy city with over 7 million citizen living together in the narrowest space and barely have the space for themselves.

Claire Lim, a local Hong Kongese try to slow a second down, free out the noises and the hustles from the stressfull lifes. Synchronize her peaceful mind with her body in such a stimulating city like Hong Kong to rediscover this beauty.

In this short film story "Moving" in Hong Kong Clare's finding her own space and power to rediscover & explore her inner self. In such facepaced cities it's very easy to stuck in your head and be quickly leave behind. You have to find a way to rethink again, imagine and free up time for yourself.

During this Video-production I reviewed also the ZEISS Batis lenses – a 25mm f/2, a 40mm f/2 CF, and a 85mm f/1.8.

Many thanks to all who contributed towards the making of this film. This story is inspired by actual real life, after interviewing Clare and asking them about their life experience. Most of the narrative is actually what they said – I just picked out the best bits!

Special Thanks to the Team from Sharedspace Clare Lim, Aaron Martin Pamela Gonzalez.

[:de]Testbericht: Zeiss Batis Objektive 25, 40 & 85 in Hongkong[:en]Review: Zeiss Batis lenses 25, 40 & 85 in Hong Kong[:]

[:de]

EINLEITUNG | Was steckt hinter dem Projekt in Hongkong

PERSONAL CONCLUSION | Zeiss Batis lenses

In this review about the Zeiss Batis lenses I try to report my personal experience about the Batis Lenses during real working conditions as a professional photographer and videographer. Last March I realized a shortfilm project "Moving" about Claire Lim, a local Hong Kongese. I tested the trio of ZEISS Batis lenses – a 25mm f/2, a 40mm f/2 CF, and a 85mm f/1.8. Review the versatility in the area of photography and video production capabilities. Here you can find some samples of the Batis Lenses about my documentary of Hong Kong. At the end of the article you can download RAW samples to get your own impression. (Shot with Sony A7RIII + Batis Zeiss Lenses)

INTRODUCTION | Behind the project in Hong Kong

On the way as a Travel photographer and videographer, I make every effort to pack as lightly and efficiently as possible. The key point of the weight is your photo gear. During the planing I focused around which lenses I would be taking for this short film project. I knew I would be using my workhorse camera – a Sony a7R III, but I had carefully weighed my options when it came to lens choices.

Just few month before my projects starts Zeiss released the new BATIS lenses. I knew I would be shooting in a wide range of environments and lighting conditions. Especially it was a video-project where a fixed prime lens is the first choice. You might think 40mm is a weired focal length? This lens surprised me in all the best ways. I only had 3 production days to get all the footage we needed in Hong Kong the weather can be bright and sunny while other days can be draped in rain and fog. Through the weather sealed Batis lenses I had never to worry about it. This city has many tight, narrow quarters to contend with along with distant subjects requiring longer focal length lenses.

I easely could fit the Zeiss Batis Lenses, which are typically smaller, lighter, and faster compared to zooms of comparable focal ranges into my Backpack.

WEIGHT, BUILD & LOOK | Zeiss Batis lenses – a 25mm f/2, a 40mm f/2 CF, and a 85mm f/1.8

So back to review the Zeiss Batis lenses – a 25mm f/2, a 40mm f/2 CF, and a 85mm f/1.8 are designed specifically for Sony E-mount cameras, I knew they offered speed, quick autofocus response times, and enough resolving power to satisfy the needs of my camera’s 42MP imaging sensor.

A great lens kit for my camera and perfect fit with a gimbal. Not only is it light, but the Batis series is beautifully balanced for the Sony body. I use the lens on a Sony a7 Riii, and I can hold it without any problems, shoot all day, and probably never get tired. That's a big deal when you're working all day. With a weight between 335g to 452g, my camera and all three lenses came in well under the 1,8 kg cap in my backpack. During production you have to consider holding this gear for at least 8-12 hours a day incl. All accessories like gimbal, screen, batterypacks.

The optical quality is more then sufficient for professional use cases and has their own unique look, which I really love. Here are some photos I took during these days and I hope there can give you a good impression of this lens kit.

OLED DISPLAY | Zeiss Batis lenses at night

Hong Kong is a visual paradise in many ways but it has its challenges. The visual moods and textures of the Hong Kong are mesmerizing, from Sunset on the Victoria Point to the night skylines of Hongkong Metropolis,  which are visually speaking magical.  Here comes the OLED Display in handy.

It’s a feature that shows the focus distance and depth of field range on the top of the lens barrel. For someone working on a tripod and shooting still subjects at night, I can see how this display could be incredibly helpful.

PERSONAL CONCLUSION | Zeiss Batis lenses

Finally, I’m more then pleased with my choice of ZEISS Batis lenses. I could trust the smooth autofocus during the video productions on the gimbal. There is nothing more important than being able to rely on your equipment during the production and thus return home with a peace of mind after exhausting days with very little sleep.

I missed any opportunities due to being ‘limited’ to the fixed focal length of my 25mm f/2, 40mm f/2 CF or the 85mm/f2 Batis. As my favorite the 40mm f/2 CF Batis – I can’t say enough about it. The 40mm focal range and close focus option makes it my everyday lens for travel projects . I would also recommend this lens to portrait, wedding & documentary photographers who love to work on location, stay flexible, shoot in a photo journalistic style to capture their subjects without the more obvious distortion of a wider lens.

I was good at academics, so decisions of my life had been pretty simple and straight. Being pretty confident I would make it to the best junior college of my town in the first round itself, never made me consider any other option. I loved psychology since childhood, but engineering was the safest option. Being born in a middle class family, thinking of risking your career to make it to medical field was not sane. I grew up hearing ‘Only doctor’s children can afford that field’ and finally ended up believing it. No one around me believed in taking risks. Everyone worshiped security. I grew up doing the same.

‘Being in the top will only grant you a good life’ has been the mantra of my life. But at times, I wish I was an average student. I wish decisions would have not been so straightforward. Maybe I would have played cricket- the only thing I feel passionate about. Or maybe I would have studied literature (literature drives me crazy). Isn’t that disappointing- me wishing to be bad at academics. It’s like at times I hate myself for the stuff I am good at.

Summer Holiday Guide: How to spend the best time of the year

Many years ago, I worked for my parents who own a video production company. Because it is a family business, you inevitably end up wearing many hats and being the czar of many different jobs. I mainly managed projects and worked as a video editor. On production, there were times that I was called on to work as an audio tech and was made to wear headphones on long production days. In those days, having a really good set of headphones that picked up every nuance of sound was essential to making sure the client got what they needed. Naturally, my first impression of these headphones is based off of the look of them. They have a classic over-the-ear style that is highlighted by a blue light that indicates the power for the noise canceling. The padding on the ear pieces seems adequate for extended usage periods.

They are wired headphones, but the stereo mini-plug cable is detachable. Something else I noticed right of the bat was the very nice carrying case that comes with them. It has a hard plastic exterior with a soft cloth interior that helps to protect the surface of the headphones from scratches. I never truly appreciated cases for headphones until I started carrying them from place-to-place. Now I can’t imagine not having a case. Once I gave the headphones a thorough once-over exam, I tried them on. As I mentioned, they have a classic over-the-ear style and just looking at them, the padding on the ear pieces seem adequate and the peak of the headband seemed to be a bit lacking, but you don’t really know comfort unless you try on the product. So, I slipped the headphones on and found them to be exquisitely comfortable.

If you look at what you have in life, you'll always have more. If you look at what you don't have in life, you'll never have enough.
Oprah Winfrey

Now that I had the headphones on my head, I was finally ready to plug and play some music. I plugged the provided cable into the jack on the headphones and then the one on my iPhone. Then I called up Pandora. I tend to have a very eclectic music purview and have many stations set up for different moods. the sound quality of these headphones was remarkable. There is an amazing depth of sound and incredible highs and lows that make listening to music a truly breathtaking experience. In order to test how voices sounded, and the overall art of mixing, I pulled up Netflix on my iPad Air and watched a few minutes of a movie to hear all the nuances of the film.

None of them were lost. In fact, I ended up hearing sounds that I hadn’t heard before. Echoes…birds chirping…wind blowing through trees…breathing of the characters…it was very impressive what the headphones ended up bringing out for me.

Best New Studio Headphones: the Ultimate Musician Guide

Just the other day I happened to wake up early. That is unusual for an engineering student. After a long time I could witness the sunrise. I could feel the sun rays falling on my body. Usual morning is followed by hustle to make it to college on time. This morning was just another morning yet seemed different.

Witnessing calm and quiet atmosphere, clear and fresh air seemed like a miracle to me. I wanted this time to last longer since I was not sure if I would be able to witness it again, knowing my habit of succumbing to schedule. There was this unusual serenity that comforted my mind. It dawned on me, how distant I had been from nature. Standing near the compound’s gate, feeling the moistness that the air carried, I thought about my life so far.

Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people's thinking.

Lasst uns anfangen:

Brennweite & Kompression: Landschaft & Zeitraffer

[slider prevnextbuttons="0" mousewheel="0" attachment_ids="9885"]

Brennweiten Beispiel 35mm vs. 600mm:

Autofokus(AF): Tierfotografie "Der Wolf"

+ Interner Zoom

+ Haptik, Stabilisierung, AF

+ Vertikal/Horizontal Schraube.

Con's:

    • - Not really a lots of con's
    • - After a whole day still heavy of course, but still light for a 600mm lens.
    • - Still a bigger lens, fits not in every bag.

To get a better understanding of the daily use of this lens under real conditions, I decided to test this lens in the following categories: Landscape, Animals, Sports & Portrait. I have combined each category with a feature of this lens. To give you an insight into a wide range of applications for this lens. This review is not only based on the technical part, but also shows the wide creative possibilities and uses of the real world. I have divided this review into 7 parts. 7 things you should now know about the Sony FE 200 - 600 mm F5.6 - 6.3 G OSS. Let's start:

FOCAL LENGTH (MM)

Focal Length Compression: Landscape & Timelapse

[slider prevnextbuttons="0" mousewheel="0" attachment_ids="9885"]

200-600mm is a fantastic focal length when it comes to time lapse. You can often see this fantastic heat around you. Record the sunrise or sunset. I used Sony's internal interval timer to shoot a beautiful sunrise at the High Venn in Belgium. Watch it here:

Autofocus(AF): Animals

To test the autofocus capabilities, I spend a day photographing white wolves in the Netherlands with the different focus modes, including Animal Eye AF, AF-S, AF-C. Most of the shots where the focus was on the point could be seen by the animal eyes. Even with very fast action shots.

[slider prevnextbuttons="0" mousewheel="0" attachment_ids="9838"]

Thanks to the 3 AF buttons (FULL |10-8|2.4-10) the autofocus is mostly on point. In combination with my Sony A7RIII this lens is a hammer. Sharp. Almost no refraction. Great bokeh. Convince yourself.

Here I have given you some examples for animal photography: My photo series photographed with the 200-600: White Wolves.

[slider wraparound="1" autoplay="1" thumbnails="1" mousewheel="0" attachment_ids="9844,9845,9842,9846,9843"]

Bokeh & Compression - Lifestyle:

Another look. Normally for portrait shoots I use a Focal Length between 35mm to 85mm. I have to say I was a little bit sceptical about using this lens for a street-fashion shoot, but it's surpised me how smooth the Bokeh and Compression of 600mm worked with an aperture 5.6-6.3.

[slider attachment_ids="9847,9848,9849,9850,9851,9852,9853,9854,9855"]

Conclusion & Price:

The optical quality in combination with the price tag of 2000 USD make this lens outstanding (Equivalent to the 600mm f4 5xtimes the price). As you can see you can use this lens for a very diversify use-cases. For me this lens is really out of the competition at the moment.

Current price on amazon:

Pro`s:

+ Image Quality

+ Internal build Zoom

+ Feel, Stabilization, AF

+ Vertical/Horizontal Button.

Con's:

    • - After a whole day still heavy of course, but still light for a 600mm lens.
    • - Still a bigger lens, fits not in every bag.

[slider wraparound="1" autoplay="1" thumbnails="1" mousewheel="0" attachment_ids="9844,9845,9842,9846,9843"]

Bokeh & Compression - Lifestyle:

[slider attachment_ids="9847,9848,9849,9850,9851,9852,9853,9854,9855"]

Behind-the-scenes: Sony SEL 200-600 Review shoots.

[slider wraparound="1" thumbnails="1" attachment_ids="9885,9887,9883,9884"]
